Can someone explain why there wasn't air support?
There was. 300 medium bombers 20 minutes before the landing. Farther inland it was too risky because of the 13,000 paratroopers that were dropped during the night.
I found a old book about the 337th and the 85th infantry Division. And in that book talking about hills 66-69 “mostly 69” a man wrote in pencil around paragraphs “I was here” “Germans ran out of there fox holes and we killed them all” “40 out of 200 men walked off hill 69.” He wrote by tons of peoples names in the book stuff like “He was killed in the hole next to mine” “Severely wounded” “Killed by GI” “Killed” He wrote many times next to some paragraphs talking about food and water and rations and how there were none. He also wrote down next to some paragraphs talking about the 92 infantry division? He wrote next to it in 2 places saying “All Black” and “No good” All the names he marked by that died where from may 12-15th. Absolutely crazy I found this with all this hand written notes in it. He said in there he became a casualty on May 16th at 4pm and got to the hospital the next day at 3 am. If you have any more information on hill 69 that would be awesome. Thanks for the video as well :)
352nd: Normandy should be a quiet assignment US in the Ardennes Forest: This should be a good spot to rest and restore our soldiers
Jume
every documentary of d-day always shows the maps from the german point of view oriented north-south .. it would be much more accurate to reverse the map and show it from the perspective of the troops landing with omaha to the left & utah to the right and facing the bluffs .. with the draws clearly marked as the objectives ..
FYI: Regina (a city name) rhymes with vagina.
This series is great. Hope you do the rest of the Normandy campaign
Thank you. There is so much to be told about the Normandy campaign but I want to switch to something different for the time being because a lot of subscribers want to see videos about fronts as well. Next video will be a long documentary about strategy against Russia. Strengths, weaknesses, debunking myths etc
Its a shame 48 Commando Royal Marines didn't get mentioned here. My dad served in 48 Commando and landed on Nan Red to attack the German strongpoint at Langrune, like the Canadian's, 48 took heavy casualties and lost 40 percent of it men in the landings and by midnight the commando was down to half its strength. Whenever he talked about the war which wasn't very often as is the norm with old soldiers he always spoke highly of the Canadians.
Why the pic distortions? If it's You Tube, then it's as usual, failure to understand.
Because the photographer was false
Most don’t realise the number of British troops on Juno including Major Mitchell and the Kings Regiment from Liverpool
Un crociato nato nel secolo sbagliato
My grandfathers Jesse B Davis (4th ID 8th IR) and Benjamin F Compton (4th ID 12th IR) landed on Utah Beach with the 4th on that day. They both fought all of the way until the end of the war and made it home.
My grandmother's cousin, with the 1st Hampshires, didn't make it off the beach here. His role was to clear it under constant direct fire.
Excellent detail gives a good overall picture of the invasion.
Aussie here. Would love to see a feature film on the Canadians kicking arse- Grayson in particular has one helluva story. It's a shame we don't live at a time when these stories are valued and can be told truthfully.
THANK YOU for telling the world how D Day didn’t just have one beach. ...I kinda guessed the glider attack on (checks map) Horsa bridge would be successful :D But damn, those paratroopers. Only got 1/7 of their men, went for it anyway and succeeded.
Overlord (not Sword Beach or Gold Beach) is a 1975 black-and-white British war film written and directed by Stuart Cooper. Set during the Second World War, around the D-Day invasion, the film is about a young British soldier's experiences and his meditations on being part of the war machinery, including his premonitions of death.
The fact that, according to the stories of local witnesses, there was not KV1 but KV2, there are even photos that have survived.
Landing plan from hell
Looks like airborne drops in WW ll were a failure on both sides
THESE ARE VERY GOOD DOCUMENTARIES AND YOUR MAPS ARE EXCELLENT!
THANK GOD HITLER DIDN'T ALLOW ROMMEL TO HAVE HIS THANKS CLOSE BY.
My dad was serving on infantry landing craft taking the troops into the beach on day he was with the RCN
"The Maple Leaf Forever"!
Allies total power of the sea and the air but very little achieved by either, German close air support dive bombing was much more effective at the beginning of the war than allied efforts were toward the end
5:07 1st Special Glider Brigade didn't relieve the Ox and Bucks . they went straight through into the eastern area to make defensive positions and relieve a few towns. Some of that didnt happen for a few weeks
Most Americans don't know that there were 5 beaches and not just 2. Apparently there were landings ar 6 beaches.
Hate to break it to ya but Regina rhymes with vagina 😅
TEAM effort ✝️❤️
All these details but not mentioning the French Canadian regiment de la chaudière, 800 men led by lieutenant- colonel Paul Mathieu, just saying
Oddly undercooked. This is certainly not definitive

My grandfather landed on Juno Beach. He was killed in December of 1944.
I was lucky enough to go on a 5 day staff ride to Normandy when I was stationed in Germany. It is truly holy ground and what those soldiers achieved was nothing short of amazing.
Good introspection, why are the German units not identified or marked?
Because I couldn't find any maps with German unit markers, as was the case with most videos in this series.
The 24th Lancers also landed at D-Day and saw some of the hardest battles of Normandy at Tilly-sur-Seulles and St. Pierre.
In the early 1960s, I spent my summers on my granny's farm and read books. One day, I found this obscure book on the bottom shelf titled "Attack Can Win in 1943!" It was pretty thick but not well written and I have forgotten most of it. The mere existence of that book shows me that the idea of an earlier invasion was an active topic on the home front, regardless of its real-world practicality.
With a lifetime of research into WW2 under my belt, I have previously stated that, man-for-man, the Canadians were the fiercest Allied soldiers in that long war. I stand by that statement.
Of the Western Allies possibly They should have been based on the majority being volunteers (conscripts did not have serve outside Canada until 1945) and had years to train. First combat Dieppe for one day in 1942, next stop Sicily July 1943.
Great video keep up the good work
Thank you. Subscribe for more. Next video will be based on strategy.
British dead on 6th June at Sword now totalled as 1,400 based on grave counts. Previously had been underestimated as no official records kept.
This really is utter rubbish. The Germans did not even have a file on Patton as per Harry Yeide. This is simply Hollywood history
And why is there not a word about the Régiment de la Chaudière at Bernières?
Effectivement
Well done, Sir.
Much respect, Canadian soldiers.
